THE FAMILY TRADITION

The family tradition is that three (3) brothers came to America from Ireland under the flag of England some time in the latter part of the 19th Century, probably 1690. The different descendants differ about how many brothers came to America, some say five. The branch of the family of this record migrated from North Carolina to Tennessee. Do not know whether our branch of the Billingsleys came from Virginia to North Carolina or not, but they are of Scotch Irish descent.

THE HISTORY OF JOHN BILLINGSLEY AND JANE MILSAP

Here is a record sent to me that is as far as I can find out belongs to our family from names, dates and states lived in.  One John Billingsley of the Virginia stock married Jane Milsap. To them were born nine children: .
     Jessie Billingsley, born in Virginia.
     Elizabeth Billingsley, born in Virginia,
     James Billingsley, born in Virginia.
     John Billingsley, born in Tennessee.
     Jane Billingsley, born in Tennessee.
     Thomas Billingsley, born in Tennessee.
     Mary Billingsley, born in Tennessee.
     Samuel Billingsley, born in Tennessee,
     Jacob Billingsley, born in Tennessee.
John and Jane Milsap Billingsley were married before the Revolutionary war, enlisted from Virginia.
James Billingsley is the father of our great grand father, Jim, as that was his name also, died in Tennessee he would be our third grand father.

THE RECORD OF GREAT GRAND FATHER BILLINGSLEY

The name of my great grand father Billingsley was James Jefferson (Jim).  I do not know' his wife's name but her given name was Elizabeth.  She was born in North Carolina, and they were married there.  To them were born eight children:
One daughter, Elizabeth, who married James Hopkins.
One daughter, Luary Billingsley, married a Moss and lived in Arkansas.
One daughter, Dorcus Billingsley, married a Cox.
One daughter, Susan Billingsley, married a McEntire.
The sons of Jim Billingsley were:
Johnathan Billingsley, who came to Texas and settled in Red River County, and was killed there by a horse.
Christopher Billingsley came to Texas from Missouri.
Burr Billingsley died near McGregor, Texas.
Henry Billingsley preempted land in an early day in Bosque County, but the county was not organized then, so he had to have his papers fixed at Waco, Texas. Henry never married.
My great grand father, James Jefferson Billingsley, lived in North Carolina. He and his wife, Elizabeth, moved to Tennessee, Mississippi, Missouri and Alvarado, Johnson County, Texas in 1853. Great Grandfather Billingsley was then a very old man, and his son Christopher, or Cris, Billingsley, helped to organize Johnson County, Texas, in 1854, Jim Billingsley lived with his son, Chris Billingsley. His wife, my Great Grandmother, died in Missouri. Great Grandfather Jim died some where about 1858 or 1859 four miles south of Alvarado, Texas, and was buried on the home place of his grandson, Mark Billingsley, and his great grandson, Aaron Billingsley, son of Mark and Sallie Billingsley, still own the place. Great Grandfather's occupation was mill-wright, he was a builder of mills, built and operated mills, the talent seemed to be handed down to his posterity, along down the line mechanics have shown up especially to own and operate machinery.

THE RECORD INCIDENT OF THE LIFE OF CHRISTOPHER BILLINGSLEY, SON OF JIM AND ELIZABETH BILLINGSLEY

Christopher, (Criss) Billingsley, my grandfather, was born in Tennessee in 1810, and came with his father, Jim Billingsley to Mississippi, then to Washington County, Arkansas married Lavesta Ann Brown in 1832.  Six children were born to this union.  Four were born in Arkansas and two in Mississippi.  Grandfather Cris Billingsley, while living in Missouri in the year of 1849, went to California to the gold fields and was gone two years, and returned and made up a caravan to return with his family to California, but something came up and the caravan disbanded, but Grandfather Criss and his family and his father, Jim, came to Johnson County, Texas in 1853, and settled northeast of Alvarado, Texas.  Then later Grandfather Criss bought six hundred and forty acres of land south of Alvarado, Criss and his three oldest boy's, Mark, Granvill and Edmonston (Ed) which is my father settled on the land and lived there for many years.  Mark died there, Granvill left before his family was all grown, Ed lived there until his family was all grown and married.  Ruth Ann Billingsley, daughter, married and was left a widow with two small children, lived with Grandfather Cris and Grandmother, their youngest boys lived at home with them while they lived there on the old homestead south of Alvarado.  Jim Thomas and Burr Billingsley.  One morning while living there Uncle Jim Thomas Billingsley, out hunting the saddle horses, rode upon a small boy asleep.  He was lost, having become separated from a train of wagons traveling, and could not find them, of course, the country was wild and unsettled.  Uncle Jim Thomas put the boy behind him on the horse and took him home.  The boy did not know his name, and no one ever called for him, so they called him Jake, as that was all he knew as a name.  We do not know what became of him.
After the Civil War between the states, Grandfather Criss took a notion to move back to Arkansas, so he sold his home, loaded his big schooner wagon drawn by oxen and one horse team and went to Red River County, Texas, to his son, Burr Billingsley, who was living there at that time, stayed there awhile and then moved to Sebastain County, Arkansas, lived there until Uncle Thomas Billingsley died in 1875.  In course of time Uncle Thomas' wife married again--a man named Smart.  She and her husband moved to Wilburn, Washington Territory.  Grandfather and grandmother had helped to raise Uncle Jim's children, so the old people moved with Aunt Victoria Billingsley.  Grandfather and Grandmother and Aunt Victoria Smart all preempted land in Washington Territory.  Grandfather Criss Billingsley was a farmer-he was a great man to go and settle a new country; to help blaze the path of civilization; to build up and then to push farther on again- leave what he had marked out for the younger generation to finish what he had begun. He was far-seeing and looked ahead for posterity, and some of his generations are living and enjoying life because of his foresightedness.  He was honest, high minded, and I must say his posterity all along down the stream of his time has not cast a shadow on his high ideals of life He,began to lay the foundation for his posterity in Tennessee, and Washington County Arkansas.  His Career, ended in Washington Territory, March 9, 1891.  But I must not close this memory without a few words for Grandmother Lavesta Ann Billingsley.  She was the mother of five boys and one girl, and it seemed to me they could always speak the word mother with the most feeling of reverence.  She, it seemed, a great woman of her day, quietly lived her life by the side of Grandfather, but her life was strong and forceful; she made it felt in all she came in contact with-a real home builder, loved her husband and children, underwent the hardships of life on the frontiers that her children and grand children might rise up end call her blessed.  Dear little Grandmother also passed to the other side to join those gone on, April 18, 1899.  The last four years of her life she was blind, and her granddaughter wrote that her great granddaughter was her companion and so much pleasure to Grandmother in those dark years.-Written by her Granddaughter and Name Sake, Lavesta. Grey Ewing.

He was taken sick, and lay two years and nine months with paralysis.  He was eighty years, seven months and eighteen days old when he died.  His life was a long useful one.  He was the good Samaritan of his community, friend to the poor, and the needy -no cry of distress went unheeded by him; no request for help was denied-his life radiated his love of mankind.  My mother his wife, was an invalid most of her married life, he was patient to the extreme-his thoughts all seemed to be of mother and we children. Most of my life father was father and mother to us.  Father and mother were members of the Baptist Church.
My father was a farmer, but always owned and, operated some kind of machinery, cotton gins and mills.  All the older of the Billingsley were men that loved rural life, city life did not have any attraction for them.  They were people who loved to be on the frontier. His greatest sport was to angle for the finny tribes, however, his daily routine of life was too complete for him to fish to his content.  Father and his four brothers all served in the confederate army, all enlisting at Alvarado, Texas.  Father enlisted in Company 4, 20th Texas Cavalry, under Captain Bruce, and was attached to Johnson's Battalion until the close of the war.
In memory of my patient, loving and trust-worthy mother, who made our life one long sweet dream, the lessons she taught us has lived and controlled our lives, and I am sure that her grandchildren, and great grandchildren, will read these simple words.  You can readily see that Grandfather and Grandmother lives in all of you today.  Let us hold this standard of life they left: "To fear God and keep His commandments."  Which is the whole duty of man.-Written by his daughter, Lavesta Ewing.
